A Successful Re-Launch

Hooray for Everyone!

We did it! We’ve survived COVID & quarantine, dusted off our hiking gear and successfully met for a Monday hike. Congratulations to everyone who ventured out to Hansville, the Quilcene and Mount Townsend this past Monday.

Pauline reports that about 20 folks made the Hansville hike and everyone enjoyed themselves immensely.

Linda says that about 15 Hikers launched from the Lower Quilcene Trailhead with two destinations: some went towards Camp Jolly and some ventured up the turn-off to Notch Pass.

The Goats had quite an experience. We arrived at the upper Mt. Townsend trailhead to find driving rain. But no worries, the rain immediately stopped… and was replaced with snow & wind! No views on the top, but plenty of wet, cold smiles.

There was a nice mix of old hands and new faces on each hike. A quick reminder to everyone: while we pride ourselves on being loosely organized, communication and situational awareness are really important. We will always wait at the trailhead for a trailing hiker and worry. Cell phones don’t work on trails, so we use two-way radios instead, tuned to Channel 2.38. That way we can keep in touch in the rare instance that we separate. Let’s try to stay aware of and connected to the group.

Here is what is planned for this coming Monday, June 14:

Walkers: The Walkers will hike the Ueland Tree Farm trails. They will carpool at the Kitsap Mall ((Between Silverdale Way and the South East side of the Mall near Wild Wings and the empty Sears Store ), departing at 9:30am or meet at the trailhead (address:Leber Lane NW, Bremerton WA 98312) for a 10:00am start.

Hikers: The Hikers will hike Dosewallips. This is a moderate hike with the possibility of hiking up to 13 miles round trip, if you go to the Ranger Station. Views of the falls are at about 8 to 9 miles round trip. Please arrive at the Poulsbo Viking Park & Ride at 7:45am for an 8am departure.

Mountain Goats: The Goats will hike the Tubal Cain trail, heading towards Buckhorn Pass. The hike to Buckhorn is almost 15 miles, but wildflowers, views and good times are there for people wanting a shorter hike. Manage your carpools based on your expected destination.

And here is a proof that June in the Olympics isn’t always sunny!
