You are seeing the weekly hiking notice on Tuesday this week because I, along with six other Mountain Goats, am heading out on what we expect will be a merry adventure tomorrow morning: the famed Press Route! We will spend the next full week walking from Madison Falls in the Elwha to the North Fork Quinault. This same trek took a party of 5 adventurers six months back in 1889! But then again, they started in winter and tried to pull a boat up the Elwha River at the start. We will settle for a stroll and (hopefully) a side trip to Martins Park. If you want to learn more about the Press Expedition, I highly recommend the book by Robert Wood, Across the Olympic Mountains: The Press Expedition, 1889-90. Here is what is planned for the coming Monday: Walkers: The Walkers will walk Gibbs Lake County Park (Jefferson County). They will carpool in Poulsbo at the North Viking Park & Ride (in the very back), departing at 9:30am or meet at the trailhead parking lot about 10:00am to start the walk. Directions to trailhead: WA-3 North to WA-104 West to WA-19 North to Egg & I Rd to W Valley Road to Gibbs Lake Road. 110 Gibbs Lake Rd,Chimacum, WA (24 miles). Trailhead parking on the right side of road. Hikers: The Hikers will hike Klahhane Ridge starting from the Hurricane Ridge Visitor Center. They will depart from the Poulsbo Viking Park & Ride at 7:30 am. Mountain Goats: The Goats will hike Dry Creek Trail starting from the Staircase Trailhead (and Shady Lane).
