Let's Be Serious, For a Minute

Congratulations on your achievement

Nobody likes the changes and limitations forced on our lives over the past eight months. We can't spend time with family, we've suspended exciting travel plans, restaurants and live music are distant memories, we can't even hike together in our normal groups. This pandemic and the discipline we've been forced to instill to curb its effect are a real challenge physically, emotionally and mentally.

Be proud. We are a community of almost 600. Many of us are and certainly all of us love someone who is at high risk . Yet to my knowledge, not a single one of us has contracted the virus. Bravo!

But it appears a third wave and even greater challenges approach.

Dr. Michael Osterholm, a revered epidemiologist from the University of Minnesota said this past weekend "the next six to 12 weeks are going to be the darkest of the entire pandemic."

Dr. Anthony Fauci this week said that "family gathering holiday poses a huge health risk, especially to people who are older or have underlying health problems."

Dr. Jerome Adams added "we’ve got to follow my three W’s: wash your hands, wear your mask and watch the distance. This is not political. I consider it patriotic to wear a mask because you’re protecting your country and you’re protecting our ability to stay open, and I really hope we can get away from this idea of opening versus health because the way to open and the way to stay open is by promoting health."

So here is a note of encouragement to all of you:

We can do this!

We are all eager to restart our lives. The holiday season is here. Shorter, darker, wetter days lie ahead, but we know how to deal with them. Take care of yourselves and get outside (socially distanced) when you can. Take care of your neighbors and your community. We'll talk about hiking and cover songs and mushrooms and recipes again next week.

Mark
