Monday's Hikes, May 16

Let’s talk about the weather

Good morning everyone, It makes me think of my favorite line from the Godfather: Leave the gun, take the cannoli (and your rain jacket). We’ve just made it through one of our wettest Aprils on record and have already gotten more rain in May than we’d expect in a normal month. All of you who have hiked know the drill: plan on getting wet… and chilly. I saw snow up the Dosewallips on Sunday and sleet in the Dungeness on Monday. Hurricane Ridge is expected to get a few more inches of snow this week! So let’s just make sure that our puffy jackets, hand warmers and rain slickers stay in our backpacks for a while. Cliff Mass and NOAA are both predicting a continued La Nina for the next few months, with wetter and cooler weather. Here are few links for the data hounds among us: https://cliffmass.blogspot.com/ https://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/analysis_monitoring/lanina/enso_evolution-status-fcsts-web.pdf https://climate.washington.edu/outlook/ Despite the forecast, here is what is planned for the coming Monday: Walkers: The Walkers are hiking the southern end of Port Gamble Trails. They will carpool in Poulsbo at the North Viking Park & Ride (in the very back), departing at 9:30am or meet at the Stottlemeyer Trailhead parking lot (address 24426, 25398 Stottlemeyer Rd NE, Poulsbo, WA 98370; coordinates: 47°47'19.3"N 122°35'42.4"W) for a 10:00am start. Hikers: The Hikers will take advantage of a -2ft low tide at 10am and hike Dungeness Spit. They will depart from the Poulsbo Viking Park & Ride at 8am. Remember: there is a $3 parking fee. Mountain Goats: The Goats will hike Slab Camp. They will depart from the Poulsbo Viking Park & Ride at 8am. Walkers: Port Gamble Trails: https://www.kitsapgov.com/parks/Documents/PortGamble_TrailMap.pdf Directions from Park & Ride to trailhead: Viking Ave to Hwy 305, left on Hwy 305 to Bond Rd, Left on Bond Rd to Stottlemeyer Rd NE (2.9 mi), left on Stottlemeyer Rd NE to the trailhead (1.4 mi). Parking is on the right. Hikers: Dungeness Spit: https://www.wta.org/go-hiking/hikes/dungeness-national-wildlife-refuge Mountain Goats: Slab Camp: https://www.wta.org/go-hiking/hikes/slab-camp-creek-and-gray-wolf-river
