A Gem in the Elwha
I hope you are all staying healthy and getting outdoors whenever possible to enjoy some of the spectacular displays of wildflowers, forests and ferns. A small group of us found a brand new trail in the Olympics this week!
We hiked the West Elwha trail from the end of Herrick Road to the Glines Canyon overlook. Altair Campground is 3 miles in, Glines Canyon about 5 miles. It was lovely with old growth and amazing fern gardens.
We have all been thinking about how we might get back to some hiking this summer. And it seems difficult, especially with a few recent confirmed COVID cases in Kitsap County. I have been taking a new web application, Sign Up Genius, for a test drive this week. It can be used to create events (like small hikes) and a "sign up sheet" with a designated number of available slots. If you would like to participate in small group hikes once we reach Phase 3 and would be willing to sign up on line on a test basis, send me an email and let me know whether you would be a walker, hiker or mountain goat. No promises, but we can give this a try. (We eventually did you Sign Up Genius, in June 2021.)
Now a note from Gary Larson: Ever wonder what happens to hikers once they give up the trail ? My name is Gary Larson, some of the old timers may remember the crazy Norwegian, unloading stumps, roots and all other sorts of wood from his pack on return to the trailhead. For the past few years I have been attempting to turn some of that wood into credible art. these are just a few of them.
