News Bulletin

Not hikes today

We have some important and interesting events happening among our hiking community and in our region, so today’s note will focus on news rather than time spent in the mountains & forest. But don’t worry, we’ll get back to hiking soon.

First and most importantly, long time Monday Hiker Wanda Butler will be 96 years young on Friday, March 5. Wanda lives at Crista Shores Assisted Living. We had planned on a party last year but of course that couldn’t happen. With COVID still here we can't give her a party this year either. So we are doing a Drive Through Celebration, March 5th Friday from 1 to 2 p.m. Wanda will be outside on the porch. Her hiking friends can drive up wave or yell Happy Birthday. Signs and balloons are welcome. We will be giving out McGavin Cupcakes as a thank you.

Next Ray Johnson reports the great news that Senator Patty Murray and Representative Derek Kilmer have reintroduced the Wild Olypmics bill in Congress. This bill will hopefully permanently protect more than 126,500 acres of Olympic National Forest as wilderness and 19 rivers and their major tributaries, a total of 464 river miles, as Wild and Scenic Rivers. You can find more information on the bill using the link below

Finally, my note last week prompted a number of new additional hikers to raise their hand and say that they are ready to hike now or will be soon when they get their COVID booster shot. Twenty-four people state they are ready to hike today, with another nine ready soon. I have connected this group and they are forming their own informal pods for now. So keep your eyes peeled: some form of small group hikes may be coming this Spring. That’s all for now,

Mark
