Patience is a Virtue

But we're not very patient

I'm sure you all saw the news yesterday that Governor Inslee has granted a variance to Kitsap County which could allow us to enter Phase 2 a little early. However, we also had a confirmed COVID infection in a health care worker in Port Orchard yesterday. All in, it looks like we will likely stay with the statewide schedule for opening. So stay patient, hiking friends.

Here are a few reports from the community:

  • Ed Chesvick went to Illahee State Park recently and reports that the parking lot is open.

  • Rick Bock has visited Gold Creek (Dungeness) and Lower South Fork of the Skokomish with no issues.

  • Al Manz reports seeing 28 cars at Ueland Tree Farm on a recent visit! Hard to social distance with that.

  • Pat Whalen made it to Mount Zion and said it was fantastic.

  • Gene Emmons used microspikes to summit Mount Townsend via Dirty Face Ridge.

  • Karen Johnson, Sandy Bochonok, Gunda Meissner & Bob Brooks ventured to Gold Mountain. I miss their company on the trail!

My personal favorite recent hike was Elbo Creek to Buck Mountain. Easy access & 360 degree views. Also I recently crossed paths with a Ranger at the Little Quilcene Trailhead (I was just getting back from Mt. Townsend). She was quite friendly at a social distance and happy to get a trail report. She confirmed that hiking is OK as long as we avoid parking lots & facilities and observe social distancing. Let's hope we can hike together in the near future!

In the meantime, Happy Memorial Day

Mark
