But we're not very patient
I'm sure you all saw the news yesterday that Governor Inslee has granted a variance to Kitsap County which could allow us to enter Phase 2 a little early. However, we also had a confirmed COVID infection in a health care worker in Port Orchard yesterday. All in, it looks like we will likely stay with the statewide schedule for opening. So stay patient, hiking friends.
Here are a few reports from the community:
Ed Chesvick went to Illahee State Park recently and reports that the parking lot is open.
Rick Bock has visited Gold Creek (Dungeness) and Lower South Fork of the Skokomish with no issues.
Al Manz reports seeing 28 cars at Ueland Tree Farm on a recent visit! Hard to social distance with that.
Pat Whalen made it to Mount Zion and said it was fantastic.
Gene Emmons used microspikes to summit Mount Townsend via Dirty Face Ridge.
Karen Johnson, Sandy Bochonok, Gunda Meissner & Bob Brooks ventured to Gold Mountain. I miss their company on the trail!
My personal favorite recent hike was Elbo Creek to Buck Mountain. Easy access & 360 degree views. Also I recently crossed paths with a Ranger at the Little Quilcene Trailhead (I was just getting back from Mt. Townsend). She was quite friendly at a social distance and happy to get a trail report. She confirmed that hiking is OK as long as we avoid parking lots & facilities and observe social distancing. Let's hope we can hike together in the near future!
In the meantime, Happy Memorial Day
