It’s time to get busy
OK an admission, I am “that person.” The one who makes New Year’s Resolutions. Even worse, I’ve kept a page-long written list of resolutions, separated into categories, for twenty-one years now. Of course I had my resolutions written down before last Monday and of course I’ve now added a second page and new category — Heart Health!
As long as you don’t obsess over achieving every single resolution, keep a sense of humor about yourself and your goals and don’t sweat the small stuff (too much), I do think the process can be valuable. It can help us focus on what is really important. It can provide a framework for setting a broad spectrum of goals (not just losing 5 lbs. or hiking to Upper Lena Lake).
And maybe the biggest surprise, doing this over a longer time can reveal insights into what is really important and how that changes. Looking back over two decades of resolutions reveals I have become a lot less personal goal oriented and aspired to more community service. Family and friends require intentional investment.
I keep trying to eat better, spend more time with Patti, live simply and drink a little less wine. Resolving to save and live simply can make a big difference. Taking up yoga stuck where golf, didn’t thank goodness!
What are some of my resolutions for 2021?
Keep this weekly note going and then do something with it
DO NOT GET COVID!
Recover from that heart attack!
Break away for a big trip once COVID recedes
Hike the Press Expedition Route this summer
Use 2020 and its isolation as a chance for growth
So what are yours? And thank you all for your kind notes of concern and encouragement over the past week. This is supposed to be about us and hiking, not me. But your support has really bouyed our spirits.
