Risk vs. Reward

Once again, it seems like a lot is going on

First, a little bit of feedback from the crowd about starting smaller group hikes: you could characterize the response as a resounding maybe. About 15 walkers, hikers & goats said they would be interested in using Sign Up Genius to reserve a slot on a small group hike if & when Kitsap County moves to Phase 3. Stay tuned on this topic.

Second, Governor Inslee has asked (mandated) that we all wear masks in public. So let's all respect his wishes, the health of our neighbors and the great progress we've made in Washington and comply. I personally always wear a mask when walking through town (Winslow for me) but haven't worn a mask on trails. I think I will begin carrying one and don it when near other hikers.

Third, YIKES! Southern California, Arizona, Texas & Florida are all seeing a spike in COVID cases, testing infection rates, hospital admissions and intubations. Yakima County is at ICU capacity. Stay safe, everyone and please don't let your guard down.

Somehow, these facts should inform our desire to move to Phase 3 and willingness to gather for hikes. I will close today's note with a photo from Silver Lake. On Monday the Upper Townsend parking lot was full by 9:15am, but almost everyone went to Townsend. We had the lake to ourselves. Stay safe and don't forget to breathe.
