Please be careful everyone
There are a couple of things going on right now that we should discuss - winter weather and the Omicron variant. We are all fearless hikers, but that doesn’t mean we’ll throw caution to the wind. Smart and safe are good guides for hiking and life in general. So… I personally will not be hiking tomorrow. I REALLY want to get back up to Hurricane Ridge and am sure the snow & views will be epic. But every time I look at risk & reward it just doesn’t compute. Port Angeles has been getting snow for days. No telling what the road conditions will be. Who knows if the road will even be open? Low temperatures tomorrow will be extreme, so there is risk even if the road to the trailhead is easy. So I will sit this one out. Please think about this for yourself as well. And then there is Omicron. It really seems like Omicron may be less severe than Delta or the other waves of COVID we’ve successfully navigated. Still, there is just no doubt that it is moving through our communities right now. The vaccines, while working as designed seem more of a dampener than a shield. We shouldn’t ignore this and take extra precautions until we know more. That means be careful at home and on the trail. If I carpool in the next few weeks, it will certainly be with a mask on at all times. That’s all for now.
Happy Holidays and take care.
