Both literally & figuratively
Yes, the Mountain Goats headed up the Duckabush Trail yesterday past Big Hump and then back down to the river for a lovely lunch at Pacman Rock. The slide area is now quite stable and navigable. We were serenaded by grouse most of the way, saw lovely wood violets, trillium everywhere, the maples in bud and of course that river in all its glory!
But more importantly, we as a nation have made it over another big hump in our COVID journey. The CDC issued revised rules for the fully vaccinated today: no need for masks in most outdoor settings and among small groups of fully vaccinated folks.
Which leads us to a third and more personal big hump: the resumption of organized hikes! Linda, Pauline and I met this morning to discuss how we might start back up. We’ve set a target date of Monday, June 7 for the first formal group hikes, with one hike each for Walkers, Hikers and Mountain Goats. The Goats have been hiking as an informal group for the past month and everything seems to be working fine using Sign Up Genius to reserve a spot. So we’ll start with this process and see how things progress.
Here is our guidance on hiking:
Please understand, but we want to limit participation to fully vaccinated folks at least initially. That will make carpooling much easier.
Bring a mask as part of your gear. Use it if asked.
Let’s all try to take it easy and enjoy the hike. It’s been a while. None of us are in perfect hiking shape.
Use SignUp Genius to reserve a spot. We’ll adjust the number of spots as we go and can judge interest.
Raise a hand if you have problems.
Don’t forget the 10 essentials and bring a walkie-talkie tuned to channel 2.38 if you have one. It makes communication easier.
If you’re the next to last car, wait for the last car. If you’re the next to last hiker, wait for the last hiker. We will publish some hiking tips as we approach June 3.
