The Tortoise

Slow & steady wins the race

Like many of you, I usually pride myself on launching head long into new adventures and projects. For better or worse, I’ve spent a lot of time being the hare. This probably comes naturally when we are eager to get out to a trailhead or to a summit. But the lesson of the tortoise and the hare is there for a really good reason!

Sandy, Dave & I discussed this at some length on my first “hike” of 2021. It totaled 3.3 miles and 56 feet of elevation change. We never left pavement and still got some lovely views of Mount Baker, the Cascades and the Olympics! It was a delight to spend time with dear friends in fresh air. Life doesn’t always go at the pace your spirit craves so we could all benefit from practicing a little patience, especially with ourselves.

I know a lot of us are trying to heal from injuries. We are impatient to get our vaccines, jump back onto the trail and resume our lives. We will be able to hug each other and celebrate soon. In the meantime let’s be content with the progress we are making, keep our eyes on the prize and lend a hand to that hare when we slowly make our way past him on our journey! That’s all I have for today. Enjoy the sunshine!
