Fall Is In The Air

Really. No kidding. At least in my mind

I know, I know. We just had our first day above 90 degrees for the year. Bella (the Irish Terrier queen of our house) tells me walks are fine but the pavement is hot. It was still getting light at 6am this morning. My tomatoes are still green. But I feel it... fall is around the corner!!!

Peaches, apples and even pears are falling from neighborhood trees. It is likely to rain tomorrow and Friday. Spiders are showing up. A friend found a few early chanterelles in the forest after a recent rain. We had night time temps in the 40s on our recent backpacking trip. We treasure our sparkling summer of long days, adventurous hikes, porch BBQs and garden bounty.

But there is a comfort in fall that I am craving right now. Apple cider, crisp evenings, Indian summer, damp mushroom forages and maybe even a log in the fireplace await.

This autumn season will be different and likely carry new worries. So let's take the time to check in on each other physically and emotionally. We may not be hiking in groups, but we are still a community.

Here is my helpful hint of the week: I saw a solid line of cars stretching from the Agate Passage to the Hood Canal bridge last Friday when coming back from a backpacking trip. There was a long line of people waiting to get up to Hurricane Ridge Monday afternoon and a chip seal project snarled traffic between the Hood Canal and Sequim. If you want to go to the Olympics in the next two weeks, get an early start and avoid weekends. We have been discovered. And here are a few pics from the North Fork of the Skok
