Hiker MISSING in the Olympics
Many of you saw this in your newsfeeds last week. Fortunately, the 21 year old young man was located safe & sound, just a day late walking out of the mountains. He had been hiking Enchanted Valley and then up towards O'Neil and Lacrosse Passes.
But we all spend time "out there," where simple first aid or rescue could be a challenge. I had to pull out my first aid kit 3 times on last week's adventure to Goat Lake. All three treatments involved an alcohol wipe & band aid, so don't get too alarmed!
So here is a question: what do YOU carry in your backpacks and brains to prepare for or prevent possible emergencies?
Do you carry an electronic SOS like the Garmin inReach or SPOT? Have you thought about an EPIRB (Electronic Personal Indicating Radio Becon) or HAM radio? How did you decide what works best for you?
What is in your First Aid Kit? How much does it weigh? Does it change for multi-day backpacking trips? What about non-medical emergencies (wet socks, floppy boot soles, bad weather, etc.) How do you cover the 10 essentials? What training have you invested in?
I am heading out for a 5 day adventure Monday to the North Fork of the Skokomish, hoping to see Flapjack Lakes and Home Sweet Home. So I will most definitely appreciate your input while packing and will publish everyone's excellent advice upon my return.
Below you will find a picture of my crazy, overkill First Aid Kit for your amusement. And yes, that is a toe you see at the bottom of the picture.
