Waking from Hibernation

A few rules to follow as we emerge

I know there are a lot of us who are eager to get back onto the trails and into the forest. This has been a long hard year and a wet winter. Our memories of past hikes are tugging at our emotions. Maybe I’m feeling extra cautious and maybe this is my WFR training (thank you again, Jim Thrash!) but I’ve got a few safety requests for everyone getting back into hiking. And yes, its true: I have trouble listening to my own advice!

  1. Take it easy out there and on yourself. It doesn’t matter how many times you’ve made it to Marmot Pass. We are all one year older and that mans the slopes are steeper, the trail is longer and our legs will be wobblier. Especially after a COVID layoff. Nobody like realizing they’ve gone too far when they’re only halfway back to the car.

  2. Check your equipment. Refresh your first aid kit. Test your boots to see if they are still waterproof. It is SO EASY to forget hiking poles, a jacket, lunch or even water when we are out of our routine.

  3. Begin with a “check-out” hike. My first hike of 2021 was a three mile walk on pavement with friends. I was exhilarated and tired when it was done.

  4. Hike with friends. First of all, it is just plain old more fun. And safer, too.

  5. Listen to your body. This is where I seem to always turn deaf. We won’t feel 100% on every hike. Some days we might have to turn back early. That is totally OK even if it goes against our natures. We will all be sharing a smile and a sandwich up on Marmot Pass by late summer! I look forward to seeing you there.
